Kolkata, Sep 5 (SocialNews.XYZ) West Bengal Police on Saturday informed that the sleuths of Birbhum District Police had been able to confiscate Rs 220 crore worth of assets owned by absconding stone quarry owner Tulu Mondal alias Mohammad Nazibuddin till now.
However, an insider from the state police said that this amount is probably a small amount of assets owned by Mondal.
“The Rs 220 crore worth of assets confiscated are just in the form of cash and gold seized from residences of Tulu, his relatives and close associates. All of these relatives and associates had confessed to the investigating officers that these assets were owned by Tulu, and they had to store these assets at their residences under pressure from the once stone-baron of Birbhum,” a state police officer said.
He said that apart from these assets of Rs 220 crore in the form of cash and gold, the investigating officials have secured information about 400 bighas or roughly 125 acres of land directly or indirectly owned by Mondal.
Once the calculation of the value of that land is completed, the total worth of the property seized will increase manifold.
“The investigating officers have also got specific clues about how fake duplicate carbon copies played an important role for the stone-quarries, who hoodwinked crores of state tax during the previous regime by using these fake documents. Surely, it was done in close conspiracy with a section of the state government officials. They will also not be spared,” said the police officer.
During questioning, one relative Minar reportedly admitted that the seized cash and gold belonged to Tulu Mondal and that he had merely been entrusted with keeping them in his custody.
With Mondal remaining absconding, police last week obtained a warrant from a Birbhum court and subsequently initiated the process for issuing a Red Corner Notice against him.
Despite remaining underground, Mondal sought legal protection from the Calcutta High Court through separate petitions before the Benches of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya and Justice Kaushik Chanda. However, Justice Chanda recused himself from hearing the matter as a related case was already pending before another Bench.
Apart from the arrest warrant, an Interpol Red Corner Notice has also been issued against Mondal. The court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate in Suri directed Mondal to appear within a stipulated period, failing which, he would be declared a Proclaimed Offender.
The businessman had earlier attempted to secure legal protection against arrest, but the Calcutta High Court dismissed his plea.
